When To Go

Summer

Summer is typically the busiest season for Spanish resorts. As everyone breaks up for the school holidays and wants to enjoy some much warmer weather, family friendly resorts start filling up, but this can push up prices in July and August. If you can travel during the school term, you can usally grab yourself an absolute bargain with budget breaks from as little as £99 per person for a flight and hotel package.

Winter

The winter months on the mainland can be much cooler, especially in the north, although southern Spain still enjoys much warmer weather than the UK. It's easy to see why so many people choose to spend their winters here. If you want some winter sun, the Canaries should be on your list. Lots of people choose to retire here because of the year-round warm weather. Even in December, January and February, temperatures can range from 20 to 30 degrees.

If your plan is to travel for a city break, summer can be pretty sweltering, sometimes too much, so holidays in May or even April, or October can be good months to visit places like Madrid or Barcelona if you don't like the heat turned up too high.

Types Of Holiday In Spain

City Breaks

Even if you want to get away just for a few days, there are some stunning cities to discover. Seville in Andalucia is definitely worth the trip, while both Barcelona and Palma provide the ideal combination of beach and city break. Valencia is another city full of culture wonder, and don't forget the capital city, Madrid which is good for a party and some sightseeing.

All Inclusive

For those who just want to enjoy the warm weather and sun on their face, by the pool for a week or two, an all inclusive holiday in Spain is ideal. There are so many Spanish hotels and resorts offering all inclusive or even half board options, allowing you to book and pay for your holiday, without having to worry about an extras, unless you want to venture out of the hotel. In some accommodation, there's even All Inclusive Plus, giving you the option to try more restaurants in the hotel, enjoy premium alcohol brands and extra activities.

Self Catering

For the cheapest breaks, self catering can be the best option. Across the country there is a wealth of accommodation with mini kitchens, so that you can buy ingredients and cook your own meals. Of course, you still have the option to take a wander and see what the local cafes and restaurants have on offer. This can be a good option if you have picky eaters in the family, but even if you do, many restaurants have children's menus.

Villas

Talking of self catering, villa holidays in Spain are also a good option if you love your own space and freedom. A number of tour operators include car hire within the cost of your booking so you can get to and from the shops, as well as drive around the area to discover some of the local hidden gems.

For Couples

Escaping just the 2 of you, from everyday life is like a dream come true. Whether you decide to go for an adults only hotel or not, spending quality time together has never been more important. Depending on your style of holiday, try lesser known areas if you want something quiet and peaceful, like the pretty coast of Port Pollenca in Mallorca, or a peaceful escape to a golf resort like the Barcelo Montecastillo Golf, near Jerez on the Costa de la Luz. And no, you don't have to play golf to enjoy a golf resort. Simply take in the views and savour the atmosphere.

For Families

Travelling with children, toddlers and babies can be a nightmare, so you want to make sure you've got all the facilities you need in your accommodation, from kids' clubs to child friendly dinnertime buffets. There are so many resorts that cater incredibly well to families, with brands like TUI MAGIC LIFE and Hard Rock Hotels. If you're booking two rooms, you should request interconnecting rooms if they have them available, and you can even book into a room specifically designed for kids.

With Water Parks

Now we aren't saying lying by the pool isn't fun, but it's great to escape the confines of the hotel and spend a fun day at a local water park. Often the parks, have complimentary or low-cost coach transfers, or you might even find you're close enough to walk. Top water parks in Spain include Siam Park in Tenerife, Aqualandia in Benidorm, and PortAventura's Caribe Aquatic Park in Salou.

Travelling

Low-cost airlines have paved the way for really cheap Spain holidays and travelling from across the UK has never been easier with airlines like Ryanair, easyJet, Jet2 and British Airways flying from lots of regional airports including Belfast, Edinburgh, Liverpool and Manchester. Do bear in mind the airports available to you. Some airlines may fly into smaller airports which are further away. Plane is by far the quickest and easiest way to get there but if you aren't a fan of flying ferry (and driving by car), and even a train or coach could be an option but they do take much longer. Ferries run from the UK to Santander and Bilbao in the north of the country, which can be a good option if you either want to visit areas like Galicia, Asturias and the Costa Verde, or even the Costa Brava by car.

Once you've arrived, you might not want to spend an hour or two on a coach transfer from the airport to your accommodation. If this is you there are a couple of places you should take a look at for short transfers. Try destinations like the Golf del Sur in Tenerife, Caleta de Fuste in Fuerteventura, Playa de Palma beach in Mallorca, and Torremolinos near Malaga Airport, which are not only short drives from the airport, but also close to the sea.
