Rome is one of those cities you have to visit in your life time so why not get it booked up now?
As one of the most historically rich cities in the world, Rome has a lot going for it. Add a feast of fine Italian cuisine and fashion laden streets and you have the makings of a weekend you will never forget.
Our trip takes us with easyJet Holidays from London Gatwick to Rome’s Fiumicino airport for just over £100 per person including taxes (luggage not included). Booking in advance with easyJet is definitely the way to go with flights to popular destinations getting booked up way in advance.
Now Rome isn’t the cheapest of cities, especially when there are so many restaurants and gelaterias to enjoy. The hotels aren’t too cheap either but there are ways around this. My first piece of advice is to stay in the city. Many hotels will say they are in the city when they really are on the outskirts. If you really are on a budget, there are a number of campsites outside Rome that offer shuttles to the city but when you’re in a city like this, it’s not ideal.
There are plenty of hostels around to keep the budget down too. The Pensione Ottaviano Hostel is located near St Peter’s Square and the Vatican City. Although a little small, it’s a great alternative for those on a small budget.
For those that aren’t, the Hotel Fori Imperiali Cavalieri is a quaint little three-star hotel in the heart of Rome. Some rooms can be small (as is the case with many hotels in Rome) but with continental breakfast included and its central location. it’s a great place to rest your head between all the sightseeing, shopping and eating. The hotel was £300 for three nights based on 2 adults sharing which means that our £250 budget per person has pretty much gone. However, it is still possible to do it all on a budget though. Staying central means you can walk to much of this city (although make sure you have good footwear) and see many of the sights without having to use public transport.
My next piece of advice is to take advantage of all the free attractions in Rome. There is a lot that can be done for free. Some activities are even free on certain days of the month so make sure you check out what’s going on before you go. For example, for EU citizens, it is free to get into the Colosseum, although you might want to hire an audio guide to learn about the history of such an epic monument.
