Getting to, from and around Lanzarote

Getting to and getting around Lanzarote

Being such a popular destination in both summer and winter, Lanzarote's year round sunshine attracts tourists and airlines in all months. From the UK you'll find direct flights from all large airports including Gatwick, Manchester, Newcastle and Glasgow, as well as more local airports such as Cardiff and Leeds Bradford in the popular summer months. Airlines include all the big players like Ryanair, easyJet and British Airways, while ABTA and ATOL protected tour operators like TUI and Jet2holidays package up flights and hotels to offer the perfect year round Lanzarote holiday.

Getting Around

Shared airport transfers by caoch are a great idea, and can be added to the cost of your holiday if it's not already included. Taxis are also available outside the terminal building, although will cost more, or you can also book a private car transfer separately to and from Arrecife airport. The price you pay will depend on where you are travelling and whether you book in advance or pay for your journey on arrival.

Car Hire

If you're hoping to get out and explore, hiring a car gives you the freedom and flexibility to do so at your own pace, whether you want to head up and find a quiet beach in the north, or drive to the water park. Booking ahead will secure you the best deals, with popular car hire companies in Lanzarote including Autoreisen, Cicar and TopCar.

Public Transport

If you're on a budget break, Lanzarote buses can be an option, with public bus services running from Lanzarote airport to Puerto del Carmen, Puerto Calero, Playa Blanca and Arrecife. There is no direct bus from the airport to Costa Teguise, so you'll need to change in Arrecife. Saturday and Sunday services are less frequent, so bear that in mind if you're flying on a weekend.

Things to do in Lanzarote

Things to do in Lanzarote

Of course, the beaches and sunshine are what most people visit Lanzarote for. However, there are a number of activities and day trips you can enjoy for when you want to do something a bit different than just laze around by the pool.

Timanfaya National Park

Why not try a trip to Timanfaya National Park? Located on the west coast of Lanzarote, Timanfaya offers some dramatic scenery, but most impressive of all is the sheer temperature of the land, owed to the volcanic activity that takes place underneath the island. Temperatures just a few centimetres below the surface can reach as high as 100C. Hire a car for the day, or book onto an organised excursion to help you learn more about this magnificent landscape.

Boat Trips

Another great way to see the island is by sea. Boat trips run throughout the year, with dolphin and whale watching the highlight for many. Trips run throughout the summer and winter seasons, but it's worth booking ahead to make sure you get the availability you want.

Island Tours

An organised tour of the island will take you to places like the Jameos del Agua Caves, Cesar Manrique Foundation and the traditional hilltop village of Haria. A must-visit is La Cueva de los Verdes, a huge cave made up of various tunnels which lead to what is often used as a concert hall.

Scuba Diving To The Underwater Museum

Feeling a little adventurous? Did you know that Lanzarote is home to the Museo Atlantico, an underwater museum just off the coast between Playa Blanca, Castillo del Aguila and Playa Mujeres. Scuba diving trips take you out to the site where you'll discover a range of sculptures including human figures and a boat.

Beaches

Lanzarote is home to some beautiful beaches, ranging from the volcanic black sand beaches, to golden sandy in secluded coves. And don't be fooled by Flamingo Beach, the name sadly doesn't mean there are flamingos there! But it is still a lovely beach.

Watersports

This Canary Island is great for watersports. With surfing, kite surfing, jet skiing, and even flyboarding, there's plenty to try out! Two of the best places here to surf are Caleta de Famara and La Santa, both small towns on the north coast where the weather often makes for perfect surfing conditions.

Where to stay in Lanzarote

where to stay in lanzarote

The main popular resorts of Puerto del Carmen and Arrecife spread across the south coast of Lanzarote and are ideal for those who want easy access to beaches, bars and the hustle and bustle of built up resorts, while smaller towns like Playa de los Pocillos and Puerto Calero offer a quieter escape.

Playa Blanca

Playa Blanca in the south of the island is a little quieter and more relaxed but still with a little nightlife for when you want to venture out. Make sure not to confuse this with the Playa Blanca beach much further up the coast. Here you'll find a mix of accommodation options from family friendly resorts, to holiday villas with private pools.

Costa Teguise

The Costa Teguise is the perfect place for a family friendly, all inclusive holiday in Lanzarote. Many of the hotels here cater really well to children, with kids' clubs, children's pools, and plenty of activities and entertainment. Outside of the hotel, if you love water parks, AQUAPARK is a fun-filled day out, with plenty of water slides, activities, and a wave pool too. Another fun activity here is to grab a snorkel and mask, and head down to Playa del Jablillo, where the bay and shallow water create an ideal place to go snorkelling.

Puerto Calero

Quieter still is Puerto Calero, a small town west of Puerto del Carmen and only 15 minutes from Lanzarote Airport. Offering a marina and some excellent restaurants, this chic and quieter resort is still only a ten minute drive from Puerto del Carmen so you have easy access if you want a livelier night out.

Matagorda

The small holiday resort of Matagorda is just a 5-10 minute drive from Lanzarote airport, making it incredibly convenient if you want to be on the beach or by the pool as quickly as possible after stepping off the plane. Popular hotels here include the Sol Lanzarote and Hotel Seaside Los Jameos Playa, which is where you'll find most of the bars and restaurants along the seafront here.

Arrecife

Lanzarote's capital city, Arrecife is home to the main port on the island, where the ferries and cruise ships dock. It's more of a city than a holiday resort, but that can actually mean a great city break in the sunhine, especially if you're after some winter sun.

Playa Honda

Playa Honda is, perhaps, the closest beach to Lanzarote airport terminal, and while there are a number of shops, bars and restaurants, it's much more of a local town with very few hotel options. You might find the odd apartment or holiday home for rent on Booking.com or Airbnb here. There's a big sandy beach, as well as Avenida Playa Honda, the beachfront promenade which runs from the east of the town, through Playa Honda, and all the way down past the airport and Playa de Matagorda to The Hotel Beatriz in Matagorda.

Puerto Del Carmen

As one of the most popular places to stay, Puerto del Carmen offers plenty for holidaymakers. A range of accommodation options from self catering apartments and villas, to 4-star hotel resorts along the seafront, mixed with shops, bars, restaurants and nightlife means there's lots to enjoy. Avenidas de las Playas is home to the liveliest of places in Lanzarote, and is where you'll want to be for a big night out.

Holiday Types

Lanzarote Holiday Types

There are lots of different types of holiday you can enjoy in Lanzarote. Here are a few of the most popular ones:

Family Holidays

Lanzarote is a fantastic family friendly destination. With many hotels offering kids' clubs throughout the year, and not just in the summer, the little ones certainly won't get bored, especially if you're staying at a family hotel with a children's pool or waterslides.

Last Minute

There are loads of flights to Lanzarote from across the UK, and airlines hate to see their seats go empty. Similarly hotels hate to see their rooms empty too. So a last minute holiday in Lanzarote could be a great option if you're flexible and just want some sunshine.

All Inclusive

Fab all inclusive resorts make this Canary Island an ideal option for an all inclusive getaway. It's such a great feeling knowing that once you've booked, there's very little extra to pay for while you're away. Except for maybe an ice cream or two on the beach!

Winter Sun

When the nights get longer and colder, sometimes all we wish for is to escape the cold and head somewhere warm. The Canary Islands enjoys year round sunshine, making a winter sun holiday a very good option, even in December or January.

Weather In Lanzarote

weather in Lanzarote

Like the other Canary Islands, Lanzarote enjoys year round sunshine and warm weather, making it a great destination for both a summer school holidays getaway, and a winter sun escape.

Spring

Between March and May, you can expect temperatures in the early to mid 20s, with plenty of sunshine. Evenings are starting to get warmer but you might still want a light jumper for those odd chilly evenings.

Summer

Although average temperatures in June, July and August are in the late 20s, you'll often see days well into the 30s, making those unheated pools and beach days jumping into the Atlantic Ocean a welcome relief from the hot summer sun.

Autumn

Autumn is another great time to visit. Temperatures are getting cooler, many hotels and resorts get a bit quieter outside of the school holidays and prices drop too.

Winter

In December, January and February, you'll still likely see plenty of sunshine (although there is a bit more chance of cloud and even a little rain), but temperatures are a balmy 18-23C. Be sure to take a jumper for the cool winter evenings when you take a wander out for dinner.
