Getting to, from and around Las Vegas

The flight time to Las Vegas is approx. 10 hours, served by a direct flight from London Heathrow airport with two airlines, Virgin Atlantic and British Airways. You can also pick up a connecting flight with the likes of United Airlines and Delta Airlines allowing you to fly from local airports like Edinburgh and Manchester via other US cities.

The airport is just a few minutes away from Las Vegas Boulevard so a cab is a great option to get to your hotel.

Getting around

The main sites of Las Vegas are relatively close together so walking, especially in the cooler months, is ideal for exploring. Otherwise a bus runs up and down the strip stopping along at the main hotels and you'll want to jump on the bus or in a taxi if you're travelling between the Strip and Downtown. There is a monorail which runs from MGM Station all the way up to the SAHARA hotel which can be useful in the hot summer months.

Car hire isn't a popular option, unless you're planning on exploring or doing a road trip. If you want to head out the Mojave Desert or Grand Canyon, organised tours and excursions can be a more suitable way to do this. The drive can be lengthy and it can be useful to have the commentary of an expert too.

Things to do in Las Vegas

When you visit Las Vegas for the first time, you'll want to try and cram as much in as possible. But one of the great things about a short break in Las Vegas is that you don't even have to play in the casinos to enjoy it. There is plenty to see and do in this bustling city, away from the poker tables and slot machines.

Each casino has its own attractions and style. The famous New York New York hotel, themed, unsurprisingly on the Big Apple, has its own rollercoaster. As does the Stratosphere, located at the top of Las Vegas Boulevard, which offers thrillseekers three different rides several hundred metres high.

Plenty of incredible shows are also on offer, ranging from celebrity performances and tribute acts, to amazing circus shows.

Downtown Las Vegas

Located to the north of the strip (you'll want to take a taxi or bus), is Downtown. Home to iconic casinos and attractions like the Golden Nugget and Fremont Street Experience, Downtown is where it all began. This vibrant part of the city is a must-see and will certainly give you a rush of adrenaline, whether from its impressive LED canopy, exciting zip line, or live music. It's also home to the fascinating mob museum.

Chilling By The Pool

With warm weather for much of the year, many holidaymakers also visit for the sun and heat. Most of the main hotels have outdoor swimming pools with sunbeds, private cabanas and often pool parties, so if you're on a family holiday, choose your hotel wisely.

Shopping

This is also a shopping city with a mix of big chain and boutique hotels in giant shopping malls and hotels like The Forum Shops at Caesars Palace and the Fashion Show Mall on Las Vegas Boulevard. From Saks Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom to Tommy Bahama and Sephora, there's a whole host of outlets and stores to get lost in.

Nightlife

The city truly comes alive at night, as the lights come on, casinos get busy, and everyone is out for a good time. The nightlife here is exceptional with a whole host of bars, restaurants and nightclubs offering evening entertainment in the form of live music, theatre shows and much more.

Where to stay in Las Vegas

The best place to stay in Vegas is along Las Vegas Boulevard or 'The Strip', as it's often known. Being right in the centre of the city means you are within walking distance to most of the main hotels and attractions. While staying in the city centre usually increases the price, lower budget hotels can still be found here, such as Imperial Palace or the Luxor hotel. With plenty of hotel rooms to be filled, there is always a bargain to be had.

The Strip

Hotels like the MGM Grand, Paris (with its iconic Eiffel Tower) and Planet Hollywood sit right in the heart of town and are good places to stay if you want to be central. On the north end of the strip, you've also got places like the Wynn, a great place for golfers, as well as Treasure Island and Circus Circus, both of which offer a budget friendly accommodation offering and very family friendly.

Downtown

Further north you'll find Downtown. Due to its history of being the old heart of the city, you'll get a little more of an "old school" experience but with modern twists. Check out hotels like the Fremont Hotel & Casino, Four Queens Hotel and the Circa Resort.

The Suburbs

If you don't fancy staying amongst the hustle and bustle, or have visited before and want to try somewhere else, there are a number of hotels off the strip and in the suburbs which can be good options. Places to stay include the Virgin Hotels Las Vegas (part of the Curio Collection by Hilton), the Renaissance Hotel and the Westgate Resort. Or if you really want to be out of the way, head to M Resort Spa & Casino in the south, or the JW Marriott Resort & Spa in the western suburb of Summerlin.
