A Guide To Holidays To Tenerife

Tenerife offers on average nine hours of sunshine per day in August and six in January, making a Tenerife holiday in 2024 / 2025 ideal, no matter what time of year you visit. And despite what you may think, it's not all party, party, party. While many come for the bars and nightlife, others enjoy the outdoors and adventure activities, or simply just a relaxing time by the pool, but whichever you choose, the sun is likely to be shining and you'll certainly be enjoying your holiday.

Cheap holidays to Tenerife don't have to cost a fortune either. While holidays around Easter and Christmas might be pricer, if you can stay flexible and explore areas you may not have thought to venture, they can cut the cost. Quieter, less established resorts like San Blas and the Golf del Sur offer a number of hotel options, plus you're just 15 minutes from the airport so you won't have to spend hours on a coach transfer when you arrive. Visit outside of school holidays like July or October and you can get some great discounts too, or simply enjoy a short break in Tenerife for just 3 or 4 days to enjoy a very cheap holiday in the Canaries. Plus self catering holidays in Tenerife can also help to keep the cost down.

All Inclusive Holidays To Tenerife

A great way to enjoy your holiday here is to book an all inclusive holiday to Tenerife. For those who simply like to "fly and flop", booking an all inclusive resort, is a great way to make sure you don't spend any more than you need to or expect to. For families, it also means the younger kids can eat dinner earlier, ensuring they can keep to their bedtime schedule.

Last Minute Holidays In Tenerife

With plenty of flights from across the UK and offering sunshine year round, for a last minute holiday, Tenerife is a great choice. Many flights from the UK depart in the morning, which means you can get to your hotel and be by the pool for some afternoon sunbathing. Whether you fancy a late deal in December or a cheap last minute getaway in March, this island should be on your wishlist.

Getting to, from and around Tenerife

One of the great things about Tenerife is that there are year round flights from various UK cities including Aberdeen, Glasgow and Bristol to Tenerife, which means easy access to sunshine all year round. Airlines flying into Tenerife South airport include British Airways, Ryanair, Wizzair, easyJet and Jet2holidays to Tenerife and you can fly from a number of regional airports including Belfast, Manchester, Edinburgh and Leeds.

Most flights to Tenerife from the UK will land at Tenerife's southern airport and a transfer between the airport and the main resort of Playa de las Americas can take between 20-50 minutes and cost from €6 per person each way. Many flights from mainland Europe also fly into Tenerife's north airport, however, this can add an extra 40 minutes to your journey. It's definitely worth looking at booking your Tenerife flight and hotel together as a package as this could save you money.

Bus services will also get you to and from the airport, and around the island. You can pick up a bus straight from Tenerife South Airport into the main resorts of Las Americas and Los Cristianos. Alternatively, taxis are always waiting at the airport.

If you're looking to enjoy a day trip or excursion, many of the most popular attractions will offer some sort of transfer, whether it be a free coach pick up from your hotel, or a paid for bus.

There are a number of holiday providers which offer financially protected package holidays to Tenerife including TUI, First Choice and Jet2 Holidays, as well as online travel agents and tour operators such as On The Beach, Travel Republic and Love Holidays, who all offer some fantastic flight inclusive holidays deals.

Things To Do In Tenerife

Most people will book a holiday to Tenerife for the sunshine, the sandy beaches and the poolside fun for the family. Sounds perfect doesn't it? But there is more to this beautiful island than simply lounging by the pool. So if you're a bit of an adventurer, up for a challenge, or simply don't fancy spending all day on the sun lounger, here are a couple of things to do in Tenerife that you may not have thought about.

You may not realise it, but there's plenty to see at sea too. Go scuba diving off the coast, and you could be swimming amongst sea turtles, or head out on a kayak, and you could be paddling next to a school of dolphins. Didn't think you could in Tenerife? Think again

Tenerife holidays also boasts the impressive Mount Teide, a 3,718 metre volcano in the centre of the island and is the highest point in the whole of Spain. Daytrips to the summit are possible and can be organised locally. You can always venture up yourself, as a cable car will whisk you up to just 163 metres short of the summit. Organised tours of Teide National Park are also available to book in advance or while in Tenerife. Alternatively, it's easy to hire a car and explore the National Park, with various walks and hiking trails to stop and enjoy throughout the park. There are also several places to stop and set up a barbeque.

Puerto De La Cruz is another day out, either hiring a car or taking the bus or an organised excursion to the city for a bit of culture. Situated on the more tropical north of the island, Puerto de la Cruz is a great place to explore for shopping, restaurants and evening walking to enjoy the scenery, which is more dramatic up in the north.

Siam Park, located in Costa Adeje, just north of Playa de las Americas is a fantastic day out for the family. Offering a range of rides for families and thrill seekers, the Siam water park is ideal for getting out of the hotel complex and enjoying one of Tenerife's exciting activities.

Where To Stay In Tenerife

Tenerife may only be a small island but not all areas are the same and depending on why you visit Tenerife, you'll want to know where to stay.

Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos are the most popular and thriving resort areas, with plenty of restaurants, bars and nightlife to experience. Beaches here are golden and sandy, with plenty of 3, 4 and 5-star resorts to book into. This is the place to stay if you want everything on your doorstep and more.

Head up the coast slightly to Costa Adeje and you'll see a slightly more upmarket resort with more fantastic beaches to enjoy. The hotels are a little more resort focused but with plenty of restaurants in the area to taste the local Spanish cuisine, particularly a little further north in La Caleta with resort hotels like the H10 Costa Adeje Palace. The stretch of promenade from Adeje to Las Americas is a good walk along the coast.

Further up the coast still and you'll reach areas like Alcala and Playa de la Arena. These are quieter, smaller towns with local bars and restaurants but still great beaches to enjoy. Coach transfer times to this area of Tenerife can be anywehre between 40-60 minutes depending on the number of stops there are at other hotels along the way.

Up from here and you'll reach Los Gigantes. It's the main town before heading into the mountains and reaching areas like stunning Masca (a great daytrip from any resort), Los Carrizales and Erjos, before reaching the northern coastal resorts of Buenavista del Norte and El Guincho.

Over the mountains you'll find a number of quieter resorts boasting golf courses and spas, ideal for a quieter getaway. It's worth bearing in mind that the north of Tenerife is a little more tropical and as such can enjoy a bit more rain than other parts of the island. Puerto de la Cruz is one of Tenerife's popular resorts on the north of the island. Due to its location, you may find that hotels here are cheaper than in the southern resorts. It's also a significant 45-60 minute drive from Tenerife South Airport to the island's northern holiday resorts. If flying into Tenerife North airport, the transfer is considerably shorter.

An unlikely choice for a hotel stay but you may choose to stay in Tenerife's capital city, Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Here you'll find many of the island's corporate businesses located, not for from Tenerife North Airport (which offers more domestic Spanish flights than South Airport). It's a popular choice for those on more of an active holiday looking to explore the north-eastern mountains and coastline like Las Teresitas, Chamorga and Taganana.
