2024 Malta Holidays Guide
In 2024 and 2025, holidays to Malta are a great opportunity to discover a new country and enjoy the Mediterranean sunshine. From it's historic forts and ancient city of Mdina, to the rugged coastlines and picturesque marinas, away from the pool and beach, there's a little bit of something for everyone.
Getting to, from and around Malta
There are lots of airlines flying direct from the UK to Malta International Airport, including Ryanair, easyJet, British Airways and Jet2. With flights from across the UK including Newcastle, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Liverpool, the flight time is around three hours, meaning, if you're lucky, you could be by the pool by lunchtime.
Once you've arrived, if you've booked a package holiday with an airport transfer, this is a cheap and easy way to get to your hotel, while a private transfer or taxi will cost around €20 each way from the airport to St Julian's Bay and around €30 each way to Bugibba.
If you're on a budget, there are also a number of buses which run from the airport to key towns, as well as around the island. Tickets cost €1.50 in winter and €2 in summer for a two hour journey.
Top Areas To Stay
Paradise Bay
Located in the very north of Malta, Paradise Bay is a very quiet area, perfect for a real escape. The Paradise Bay Resort Hotel is close to Cirkewwa port, where you can catch the ferry to Comino and Gozo, and is the place to come and unwind, by the pool. While there isn't too much going on outside of the hotel, it's a good base to explore the northern coast and the other islands.
Mellieha Bay
Mellieha Bay is large cove in the north with Ghadira Bay and Mellieha Bay beaches. About a 30 minute drive from St Julian's Bay, there are a number of large, self-contained resorts including db Seabank Resort & Spa and the Mellieha Bay Hotel. Many Maltese locals visit on days out to the beach where there are ice cream stands, beachside restaurants and watersports equipment rentals.
Bugibba/Qawra
Bugibba and Qawra are great areas outside of the main St Julian's and Sliema area of the island, where you'll find both larger resorts like the Dolmen Hotel and db San Antonio Hotel, and smaller hotels with rooftop pools like Sunflower.
St Julian's
St Julian's Bay is a livelier resort on the island, with plenty of restaurants and bars in the area, perfect for those self catering or on a bed and breakfast basis. Some cute, picturesque restaurants line Spinola Bay, while the Westin Dragonara Resort and Casino are a destination themselves. Nearby St George's Bay also has a couple of resort style hotels, great for all inclusive stays too.
Sliema
Sliema is another busier part with a mix of shops, restaurants and accommodation. This outcrop is the perfect place for a long coastal walk, as well as all the way from Sliema Promenade, through to Msida Marina and all the way round to Valletta.
Valletta
Malta's capital city, Valletta, is rich in history and the commercial centre on the island. This fortress city is surrounded by the old walls, with Fort St Elmo and the National War Museum located on the edge. There aren't too many holiday style hotels within the city walls, but you will find private apartments for rent. Instead, just outside Valletta City Gate are The Phoenicia and Grand Hotel Excelsior, both premium hotels with excellent views.

Despite being a small island, there are a number of different holiday types you can enjoy in Malta, from family friendly to city breaks.
All Inclusive
With larger resort style hotels available, you might find all inclusive the best choice for you, allowing you to enjoy time by the pool in the sunshine and the hotel's buffet restaurant. Even though all your meals are included, you've got to head out for at least one meal at a nearby restaurant to enjoy the local cuisine.
Adults Only
Malta is a great adults only destination, with adults only hotels, cultural excursions, and plenty of bars and restaurants to enjoy.
Last Minute
Malta is a great last minute holiday destination, with flights from across the UK, making it easily accessible. Hotels can get busy during peak times of the year like July and August but there are often still late deals available to take advantage of.
Villa Holidays
There are lots of cute villas and holiday apartments dotted around Malta, from privately owned to professionally run. Many also have access to a shared or private pool so you can make the most of the warm sunny weather.

Malta enjoys year round sunshine and warm weather which is why it attracts so many Brits year after year.
Winter
Winter temperatures usually sit around the mid teens and many people spend several months here between December and February to escape the northern Europe colder winters. It's still susceptable to a bit of rain so be prepared for any weather.
Summer
The summer months of June, July and August enjoy long sunny days by the pool or at the beach, with temperatures reaching the late 30s and sometimes into the 40s. Make sure to bring the suntan lotion and find some shade.
Spring/Autumn
Whether for a weekend city break or 7 nights escaping to the Med, both spring and autumn provide idyllic temperatures in the 20s and regular sunny spells.
