Bulgaria Destination Guide

Getting There
Travelling to Bulgaria from the UK is pretty easy with multiple flights a day from across the UK. Major airlines, including British Airways and TUI, and low-cost carriers such as Ryanair, Jet2, Wizzair and easyJet, offer direct flights to Sofia, Varna, and Bourgas from several UK cities. Flight times are generally around three to four hours, making Bulgaria an easy destination for both a beach and ski holiday.
Getting From The Airport To Your Resort
Depending on where you land and what sort of holiday you're on, there will be different ways to get from the airport to your hotel. If you're on a city break in Sofia, public transport is fine for getting from Sofia airport to the city centre. If you're off on a beach holiday, having a pre-organised airport transfer can be the best, and with Jet2 and TUI, that's generally included.
Tour Operators
Although you can book your flights and hotel separately yourself, one of the best ways to book a holiday is through an ABTA or ATOL protected tour operator. Companies like TUI, Jet2holidays, and Thomas Cook specialise in tailor-made packages that include flights, accommodation, and sometimes even luggage and airport transfers. Packaging everything up together can often mean good savings, plus, then everything is already sorted, you don't have to worry about extras.

Where To Stay
Beach Holidays
Accommodation in Bulgaria varies from luxury hotels to charming guesthouses, catering to all tastes and budgets. Along the Black Sea coast, resorts like Sunny Beach and Golden Sands are well known for their well-established tourism industry, so you've got shops, bars, restaurants and vibrant nightlife, making them perfect for those looking for a lively beach holiday.
For a more relaxed holiday, consider staying in Nessebar or Sozopol, where you can enjoy the ancient towns filled with rich history, but still take full advantage of the beaches. You might find a few more boutique hotels and family-run B&Bs in these areas which can be great for experiencing a more authentic Bulgaria, but there are still big hotels if that's what you prefer.
Sofia
Inland, the capital city Sofia offers a fantastic city break alternative. The city combines thousands of years of history with a lively modern culture, offering stunning landmarks like Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and Roman ruins scattered throughout the city. You'll find everything from international hotel chains to local boutique hotels and Airbnbs, and you can combine them with flights from Ryanair, Wizzair and easyJet for a cheap city break option.

Ski Holidays
Bulgaria is also a fantastic destination for ski holidays, boasting some of the best-value skiing in Europe in the Rila mountain range. Resorts like Bansko, Borovets, and Pamporovo are well-equipped to cater to both beginners and experienced skiers, with a range of pistes and lifts. Bankso is often popular with groups looking for lively apre-ski.
These resorts also offer excellent après-ski, particularly in Bankso where many groups head for a bit of a party holiday. You'll find cozy mehanas (taverns) and lively bars to unwind in after a day on the slopes. The ski season typically runs from December to April with the cheapest time to go at the very start and end of the season, but Bulgaria is actually one of the cheapest ski destinations in Europe.

When To Go
The best time for Bulgaria holidays largely depends on the type of holiday you’re after. The summer months from June to August are ideal for beach holidays, with temperatures averaging around 28°C along the coast. This is the peak season when the Black Sea resorts come alive with tourists and locals alike.
For ski enthusiasts, the winter months from December to March are perfect, as the mountains are covered in a thick layer of snow ideal for skiing and snowboarding.
Spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) are excellent times to visit for those interested in exploring both Bulgaria's cultural sites and natural landscapes, and its beaches, with milder weather and fewer crowds. You'll find cheap Bulgaria holidays around these times.
