Travelling To And Around Portugal

Travelling To And Around Portugal

With three main international airports on the mainland (Porto, Faro and Lisbon), plus airports in Funchal, Madeira and the Azores, there are plenty of flights between the UK and Portugal.

The country has a decent train network but by far one of the best ways to explore the country is by hire car. This can give you the freedom to head into old towns and villages, to quiet sandy beaches, or up into the hills for a day of hiking.

In the regions, there are local buses and a few trains, however, they aren't always that frequent. In some instances it might be better to organise a private or shared coach transfer, especially if you're in areas like the Algarve.

Holiday Types

Holiday Types

Whether you're spending a week away with the children in the school summer holidays, hoping to hike amongst dramatic scenery, or simply wanting to spend a few romantic days discovering a new city, Portugal makes for a superb destination.

Villa Holidays

Villa holidays in Portugal are a great way to spend time with loved ones in the privacy and comfort of your own home, especially if you're a larger group. A range of villas are available from one bedroom cosy pads on the Silver Coast, to expansive luxury villas with private pools on the Algarve Coast. Find out more about villa holidays in Portugal here.

Beach Holidays

Of course, many people head to areas like the Algarve to enjoy the sun, the beach and the family friendly resorts on offer. With swimming pools, entertainment, bars, restaurants, spas and so much more, all just within a short distance of the beach, you'll be spoilt for choice. Don't forget areas along the Atlantic Coast too.

City Breaks

For a bit of culture, history, food or nightlife, city breaks like Porto and Lisbon are the best options. Hotels in the city centre can come at a higher price so always take a look at the suburbs if you're on a budget. Try out the local Portuguese cuisine, especially the pastel de nata (traditional custard tarts), or simply soak up some of the wonderful cafe culture in both places. Did you know you can even combine a golf break and a city break in one, in places like Lisbon and Cascais?

Another great place to try is a city break in Faro which can combine the best of a historic city, and the sunshine and beaches of the Algarve.

Weather In Portugal

The weather in Portugal will depend on where and when you go. In summer, all areas can be stunning, with temperatures regularly reaching into the 30s during July and August. While it may still be sunny, winter months can get pretty chilly, especially in the north and when you've got the strong sea winds on the coastline. Many still choose Portugal to spend their winter as it's still warmer than the UK.

There is also the option to upgrade your room, suite or villa when booking too. Whether you just want that little extra space or a balcony with a beautiful sea view. There are even swim up rooms in Spain too, and adding on extras to the price is always possible. You can even organise a private car transfer from the airport instead of a coach transfer. Keep an eye out for the hotels with spas too. Blissful treatments and hydrotherapy circuits are the best way to wind down after a hard day of sunbathing by the pool.
