It's good to get away at the end of a long week at work, so a weekend break is the ideal opportunity to do so. Whether you're thinking of staying in the UK or heading abroad, a one or two night stay at the weekend can be a welcome relief from daily life, especially if you don’t have much annual leave left to make use of.
Types Of Weekend Break
For those after an active getaway, a few of the many choices include the Cotswolds with afternoon rambles through rolling hills and woods, or for a little more active, try Wales' Snowdonia National Park and give Mount Snowdon a go. Or for the adventurous, perhaps some paragliding off the Sussex South Downs might be in order?
For a romantic weekend break, you may find that a cool, boutique hotel, with a bed so comfy you won't want to leave your room, is just what you need. Or perhaps you want to whisk your significant other off to some romantic destination like Paris or Venice. If it's romance you're after a weekend break is the perfect way to say 'I love you', whether for a birthday, anniversary or simply just because.
If you just want to chill out, head out and enjoy one of the UKs many spa hotels. Overnight spa packages start from £59 per person when staying a Sunday night. Alternatively, enjoy a city hotel and book into a nearby spa for a much needed massage treatment. There are plenty of spa options for catch ups, romantic getaways or simply just some much needed alone time.
Of course, for many, the idea of a weekend break is city break, the chance to explore a new destination, either somewhere in the UK you've yet to visit or somewhere abroad with a little culture. Traditional cities like Amsterdam, Barcelona and Bruges are great weekend break destinations.
Top Weekend Break Destinations
When heading abroad at the weekend, there are some fantastic cities to explore, both the usual suspects and other less thought of cities.
Barcelona is one of those traditional weekend breaks that combines culture, (usually) sun, beach and delicious food. Why not try staying in the suburbs to keep the hotel cost down?
Berlin is another great destination to explore. Rich in history and culture but also offering a great nightlife scene, Berlin offers the best of both worlds. Discover Berlin in the summer and enjoy various "beach" bars dotted along the River Spree.
For something a little less discovered, Dubrovnik is wonderful. Take time to explore the city by foot, walking the walls of this beautiful city and spot some of the locations used in the TV series, Game Of Thrones. Top restaurants also populate this town so be sure to try some of the local delicacies.
Or if you're after a bit of sunshine, why not spend a few days on the beach in the Algarve. Stay in the likes of Vilamoura and you're only 15 minutes from the airport meaning you're doing less travelling and more sun worshipping.
