Self Catering Holidays In Tenerife Guide

A Guide To Self Catering

Whether you love it or hate it, self catering holidays in Tenerife are a fantastic way to keep the cost of your holiday down. The price of self catering accommodation with flights can be significantly cheaper than going all inclusive or even bed and breakfast, especially if you and your family or group don't want to over indulge on the buffet at all times of day.

What's more, it also means you don't feel guilty for not eating in the hotel restaurant. You can head out and discover some fantastic restaurants and cafes, from the budget friendly three course meal deals along the Las Americas seafront, to the quaint little eateries nestled in the mountains which offer panoramic views over the surrounding area and out to sea.

This is also good, if you have specific dietary requirements or certain members of your group can sometimes be fussy. There are plenty of supermarkets and mini markets dotted around the tourist spots including Costa Adeje, Americas and Los Cristianos so you're generally never too far away from grabbing the food you want. And with top brands like Lidl, Mercadona and Hyperdino about, you're such to find all you'll need.

Some of the best self catering holidays in winter can be found on the shores of Tenerife, and you'll often find people spending months at a time out in the Canary Islands during the winter to escape the cold UK weather.

Popular Self Catering Resorts

We always recommend booking a financially protected package holiday through a well-known tour operator or travel agent, simply for the peace of mind it can bring. However, amongst the self catering resort style apartments, you can also find high standard privately owned self catering apartments and villas through the likes of Airbnb and Booking.com. These can be a little riskier in terms of the quality but can be very affordable.

Playa De Las Americas

Playa de las Americas is well known on Tenerife for its budget friendly accommodation. Well suited to both families and groups of friends, there's a variety of self catering accommodation here. Beachfront accommodation is generally more of the hotel style resorts, but head a few streets back from the promenade and you'll find a wealth of fantastic self catering hotels and apartments. Villas are also a good option, especially for larger groups or families but may not be as close to Playa de Troya and las Americas beaches.

Costa Adeje

Costa Adeje is often seen as Tenerife's more upmarket area with some fabulous 5-star hotels and resorts in the area and a number of upmarket boutique stores too. But step back from all that and you'll find some fantastic self catered facilities in the area like the GF Isabel and Hotel El Duque. Further back still, just across the other side of the Autopista del Sur and you'll find plenty of privately owned apartments and houses which are often available for rent throughout the year.

North Tenerife

As pretty much all direct flights from the UK land at Tenerife South airport, the south of the island is much more popular with British holidaymakers. However the north of the island can not only be much cheaper, but can bring a whole new dimension to your holiday. The risk? It can sometimes be a bit rainier. But the odd extra rain shower brings lush landscapes and vegetation, ensuring a completely different experience on your holiday. Self catering cottages and apartments can be cheaper than the south meaning you can sometimes get more for your money in places like Puerto de la Cruz and Playa de la Arena.

Top Self Catering Holiday Brands

Companies like Jet2holidays and TUI provide ABTA and ATOL protected, self catering package holidays. This is often the best way to book, through a reputable agent or tour operator. Travel agents such as loveholidays, Flight Centre, Kuoni and many others also offer this protection when booking your flight and acommodation together. Some agents don't always have the same level of protection so make sure to check who has what when you book.

Booking your travel and self catering villa or apartment separately yourself has become a very popular option for holidaymakers looking to getaway, tailoring their holiday to their own requirements. This is particularly the case if you have friends or family who you are renting a self catering apartment or villa from, or you've found a stunning Airbnb property in the hills fo Tenerife, offering spectacular views of the coastline.
