Once the home of insurance company Aviva, the 4-star Malmaison York hotel has been completely transformed into a destination hotel, with multiple restaurants, rooftop bar and restaurant and spa. Each of the 150 rooms have been designed to the finest detail, with larger rooms available for families and groups (this hotel is great for hen parties), and upgrade options like Suites for special occasions or longer stays.
The hotel only opened in 2021 and it's easy to see why this place has become so popular so quickly. Easy access to both the city centre and the train station, stunning rooftop bar and brand new rooms have made this place an incredible hotel to stay at, whether you're visiting with friends, taking time out with the kids, or enjoying a romantic weekend break.
Rooms
The rooms here are very modern with everything you'll need for your stay. All rooms have a hairdryer, ironing board, tea and coffee making facilities, flat screen TV and free WiFi as standard. There's also 24 hour room service here too. Pets are permitted at the hotel. In fact, all Malmaison hotels are dog friendly, however, there is an extra charge for this.

Standard Room
There are both twin rooms and double rooms within the Standard Room category at the Malmaison hotel in York. These rooms are bright and spacious with en-suite bathroom, toiletries, tea and coffee making facilities and a desk.
Similar to Standard Rooms, the Mal Club Rooms offers guests a kind size bed and all the amenities you'll need for your stay, plus a few luxury upgrades like a Nespresso machine, free water and bathrobe in the room.
Mal Club Deluxe Rooms are the perfect upgrade for extra space and has an amazing monsoon shower in the bathroom. Guests can also make use of the Nespresso machine, complimentary bottled water and that all important relaxing bathrobe.
Sleeping up to 3 adults and 1 child, family rooms have a king size bed, plus a sofa bed so you can make sure you're all in one room. These rooms also have all the amenities you'll need, from free WiFi and flat screen TV to a Nespresso machine, bathrobe and slippers and luxurious toiletries.
Ideal for celebrating special occasions or simply having extra space if you're staying for a bit longer. The Suites here have an area dedicated for the sumputuous king size bed, as well as space for a dining table. You'll get all the same wonderful amenities as you'll get in the Mal Club Deluxe rooms too.
Despite being incredibly popular, there are some absolutely fantastic deals to grab here. From 1 night packages with meeting room access, to 2 night breaks with afternoon tea and a spa treatment, there are options to suit all budgets.
Most packages are booked directly through the hotel website, however, for simple stays with breakfast, you can use all the main hotel booking sites like Booking.com, Hotels.com and Expedia so that you can collect those all important discounts and frequent traveller points. Rarely are there discount codes but it's always worth keeping an eye out.

If you're a fitness fanatic, you'll love the gym here. With a very cool vibe, this fitness centre has just what you need to keep up your training regime while you're staying away, with a good selection of state of the art cardio machines, weight machines and free weights.

Parking is available at the hotel, however, there are just 8 parking spaces and there is a £25 per car per night charge. There is an NCP car park a few minutes walk away which charges £24.50 per car per 24 hours.
Food & Drink
There are two very popular restaurants here, with the Sora sky bar and restaurant being one of the hotel's biggest attractions, plus the more casual Chez Mal Bar. It's worth booking early to avoid disappointment.
This popular place has both an a la carte menu and a set menu, if you'd like to stick to a budget or love a good deal. Food ranges from classic dishes like burgers and curry to more seasonal plates, such as lamb shank shepherd's pie and plum crumble. There's even a kids dinner menu, making this a popular choice for families staying in the city.
Afternoon Tea
Afternoon tea is also served here which is available to both hotel guests and customers who aren't staying. The classic cream team starts from £15 per person with extra options including prosecco, champagne and cocktails also available. Packages which include afternoon tea and a spa treatment are also available and can be booked directly with the hotel.
Chez Mal Bar
The Chez Mal Bar is open from 12pm every day and serves a strong mix of drinks and food. The bar food menu offers everything you'd expect with dishes like "posh" sandwiches and light bites to keep you going.
Sora
The Sora sky bar and restaurant is the place to be, especially during the summer. Here the rooftop views of the city will simply mesmerise you as you sip on a cocktail with some relaxed beats. The restaurant actually serves up a selection of Asian fusion tapas with small dishes including sushi, tempura and salads perfect for sharing with friends. Although closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, the cocktial bar stays open until 12am on most other days and can get very busy. If you hope to eat or enjoy a drink here, it's certainly worth booking as far in advance as you can to avoid disappointment.

If you have missed out, there are still some great restaurants nearby, including the usual chains like Pizza Express, Byron and Las Iguanas, as well as independent eateries such as The Orchid Vegan Restaurant and The Whippet Inn, a modern steakhouse restaurant. There's also a Starbucks coffee shop right outside the hotel.

JORVIK Viking Centre
The JORVIK Viking Centre dives into the history of this fascinating city. Looking back over 1,000 years ago, the musuem tells the stories of the city as it previous was, showcasing the buildings and homes, as well as the way of life for local people. Both incredibly fascinating and educational, the JORVIK Centre is great for both grown ups and kids.
York Minster
Built in 637AD, York Minster towers over the city. Also known as the Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of Saint Peter in York, the historic "cathedral" is a sight to beyond with its impressive Anglo-Saxon architecture. You'll be mesmerised by the sheer scale of the building, and in particular the Great East Window which is the largest expanse of medieval stained glass in the United Kingdom.
National Railway Museum
Another great one for kids (and adult train fans too), the National Railway Museum is just a 10 minute walk from the Malmaison hotel. Tickets are released six weeks in advance, and although tickets are free, it is recommended to book early, particularly if you're visiting during school holidays. A donation to help support and transform the museum is welcome but not necessary.

Getting Here
Getting to the hotel by public transport is very easy. York train station is a 5 minute walk away which has direct links to Newcastle, Edinburgh and London Kings Cross station. There are various bus stops outside the hotel too. If you're planning to travel by car, there are 8 parking spaces available at the hotel. These get booked very quickly and you'll need to reserve these in advance of arriving. The cost is £25 per car per night. Meetings & Events
As part of the hotels' Work+Play concept, the Malmaison is well designed for meetings and events. There are meeting packages, allowing you to hire a space with lunch options for just the day, or 24 hour options, allowing guests to stay as part of your meeting or event. The three rooms available here are broken into three separate suites with flexibility to create boardroom style and presentation options. All three rooms can be combined to host up to 180 people in a theatre style format. There are also six individual meeting pods, allowing smaller breakout groups where necessary.
Hotel Reviews
Guest reviews on the likes of TripAdvisor in 2024 are really good with over 500 previous guests rating the hotel, on average, 4.5 out of 5. Many people comment on the modern and clean rooms, friendly staff and excellent location, with it being within walking distance of York train station and the city centre. The sky bar restaurant is also a popular feature. Any negative reviews were generally a mix of things from noisy rooms because of people walking past the front of the hotel, to staff struggles in the bar, but overall, this place has a lot of excellent feedback.
