Our Guide To Choosing A Hotel In Mexico For 2026 And 2027

Nearly everyone who books Mexico from the UK lands at Cancun, and nearly all the hotels the UK holiday companies sell sit on the 130 or so kilometres of coast between there and Tulum. That's the stretch this page covers. The sea really is the colour you've seen in the photos, the beaches face east so you get the sunrise with your morning coffee, and the big all inclusive resorts here give you more for your money than most long haul hotels I could name.

What catches first timers out is how different one end of the coast is from the other. A hotel in Cancun's Hotel Zone and a hotel near Akumal can be the same price and the same star rating, and you'd still come home from two completely different holidays. So before you look at a single hotel, spend five minutes working out which part of the coast suits you. That's just below, followed by the hotels I'd point you to in each one.

Cancun, Playa del Carmen or Tulum? Picking Your Part Of The Coast

The coast runs north to south from Cancun, and the one number that matters more than people expect is the transfer time. After ten hours on a plane, the difference between a 25 minute drive and a two hour one is real, especially with children. The times below are a rough guide from Cancun airport; traffic and roadworks can add to them.

Costa Mujeres and Playa Mujeres (40 minutes to an hour). North of Cancun, and where most of the newest big resorts have gone up. It's quiet, the beaches are wide and there's very little outside the hotel gates, which is the point. Good for couples who want new, polished and calm. The only catch is that the transfer goes through Cancun town, so it can drag at busy times.

Cancun Hotel Zone (around 30 minutes). A long strip of sand shaped like a number 7, with hotels on one side of the road and restaurants, bars and shopping on the other. If you want to walk out of your hotel at night and have somewhere to go, this is the only part of the coast that really does that. It's built up and high rise, so don't come here for a sleepy fishing village. One tip: the side facing the open Caribbean gets proper waves, while the shorter stretch facing the bay is much calmer for young children. Discover all inclusive resorts in Cancun

Puerto Morelos (20 to 40 minutes). My favourite compromise. It's the closest stretch of the Riviera Maya to the airport, there's a reef just offshore that keeps the water calm and good for snorkelling, and the village itself is small and friendly. The resorts here are mostly big, comfortable all inclusives. If you've got kids and you're dreading the transfer, start looking here.

Playa del Carmen and Playacar (about an hour). Playa del Carmen is a proper town, with a long pedestrian street (Fifth Avenue) full of restaurants and shops, and ferries across to Cozumel. Playacar is the gated area of resorts just south of the centre, so you get a big hotel with a beach but can still walk into town for dinner. A good fit for couples and families who don't want to be stuck in the resort all fortnight.

Akumal, Kantenah and Xpu Ha (around 90 minutes). Further south, the hotels get bigger and more self contained, and the sea life gets better. Akumal Bay is known for turtles feeding in the shallows, and there are cenotes (natural freshwater pools) dotted all through the jungle here. This is where you'll find the Bahia Principe complex, Grand Palladium Kantenah and a few of the best adults only hotels on the coast. Don't be thrown by the names, by the way: Bahia Principe Explore Tulum and Explore Coba are next door to each other near Akumal, not in Tulum or Coba.

Tulum (around two hours). The Mayan ruins sitting on a cliff above the beach are one of the great sights of the whole coast. The hotel scene is smaller, more boutique and less all inclusive than further north, and the transfer is the longest of the lot. I'd suggest Tulum to couples who've done a big resort before and want something with more character. For a first family trip, I'd stay further north and come here for the day.

Getting To Mexico And Your Hotel

Most Mexico holidays from the UK fly into Cancun. TUI flies there direct from Gatwick, Manchester and Birmingham, with extra flights from a handful of regional airports such as Glasgow, Newcastle and Belfast on selected dates. British Airways also flies from Gatwick, and Virgin Atlantic from Heathrow, mainly over the winter.

Allow around ten hours on the way out and a bit less coming back. The return is usually an overnight flight that lands in the UK early the next morning, so if you can book the following day off work, do.

Cancun is five hours behind the UK in winter and six in summer, because Mexico's Caribbean coast doesn't change its clocks. The good news is that jet lag going out is gentle. You'll be wide awake for the sunrise for the first few days, which on an east facing beach is no hardship.

Package holidays include your transfer. If you're booking flights and hotel separately, book a transfer before you go rather than sorting one out in the arrivals hall, where the sales pitches are relentless. If you'd rather drive yourself, the main coast road (Highway 307) is straightforward and makes day trips easy.
