The resort of Portimao on the Algarve's western end has more of an urban, local town feel than a holiday resort. But that that does mean are some fantastic, budget friendly apartments and villas for rent, with plenty of local supermarkets, restaurants and bars. You'll find that many hotels in Portimao are self contained so you can just sit by the pool and relax on holiday.
Getting To, From & Around Portimao
Roughly a 50 minute drive from Faro Airport, Portimao is one of the furthest resorts from the airport but that can also help to bring down hire prices. A taxi will cost in the region of about €70. A coach shuttle will be a cheaper option, however it will take longer to get there due to the additional stops to drop off other holidaymakers enroute.
Things To Do In Portimao
Despite being the Algarve's second biggest town, it isn't directly connected to the beach. It is, however on the bank of the Arade River and is more like a local town than a holiday resort. Head a few minutes south though, and you'll reach the popular resort of Praia Da Rocha and it's lovely, sandy beach. Perfect for a day away from the pool.
For a bit of culture, you might want to try the Museu de Portimao which gives a bit of insight into the history of this old fishing town, or a visit to the Fort of Santa Catalina. As with all holiday resorts along the Algarve, Portimao offers a variety of boat trips for a fun day out with family or friends.
Where To Stay In Portimao
You'll find that much of the accommodation in Portimao is private, and the likes of apartments and villas that can be rented out, as a result, if it's a cheap self catering holiday, Portimao could be for you. The beach isn't too far away but if you'd prefer more holiday facilities, a holiday in Praia Da Rocha, just a few minutes away is probably a better option for you.
