Getting to, from and around Albufeira

Your flights will be into Faro, with Faro airport to Albufeira takeing about 40 minutes in the car and costs about €35-40 each way by taxi. Taking the bus will take longer as you will need to catch a bus into Faro centre first before another bus will take you over to Albufeira. If you're booking a package holiday and don't plan on travelling around much, it might be worth adding on (if it's not already included) a coach airport transfer. This can be a simple and budget friendly way to get between your hotel and the airport.

Taxis are readily available in Albufeira to take you out and about, or even along the coast to other popular resorts but hiring a car to explore the coast is also a really good option. It's usually better to book a hire car in advance and pick it up from the airport so you avoid disappointment but there are car hire places in Albufeira too.

Many hotels can also help you book activities and excursions in the area, like boat trips or day tours, some of which will pick you up and drop you off from your hotel, so you don't have to worry about transport.

Things to do in Albufeira

Albufeira is set on two beaches, the main one being Praia do Peneco. A day at the beach is a must on holiday but during the peak summer holidays, they get busy, so get down there early.

Albufeira Old Town

Albufeira Old Town is a popular place to go if you fancy grabbing a bite to eat or wandering around the shops. This is the more traditional part of town, still with bars and restaurants but has a bit more of a local Portuguese vibe.

The Strip

Completely opposite to the Old Town is Albufeira Strip. The Strip is home to the town's nightlife, clubs and late night bars. If you're after a lively holiday with your friends, this can be a great area to stay or be close to.

The Beach

The sandy beaches in Albufeira are often the busiest, broken down into four areas, Praia do Peneco, Praia dos Pescadores (Fisherman's Beach), and Praia de Albufeira. There is also a quiet cove nearby called Praia dos Aveiros. Spending a day on the golden sands here is great if you want to escape your hotel for a little bit or if your accommodation doesn't have a pool and you want to cool down by the sea.

Marina

Albufeira Marina, located in the west of the town has a couple of bars and restaurants but while you'll down here, you'll want to check out the various activities on offer. A boat trip is a fun day out with options including fishing, parasailing and even flyboarding being just a few of the many things to do from here.

Golf

Portugal is known for it's good weather and golfers often choose Albufeira for its central location, access to plenty of bars and restaurants and ability to get to nearby golf courses. The nearest courses are Salgados to the west and Pine Cliffs to the east. There's also a 9-hole par 3 course at Balaia Golf Village.

Where to stay in Albufeira

Most of this area of the Algarve has a full range of accommodation options from self catering apartments to all-inclusive resorts. Summer holidays are always busy, but many still visit for the winter sun when prices can be lower and hotels quieter. Some hotels even close for the winter so check before you book!

Areas To Stay

Hotels are scattered about Albufeira so if you’re up for a party, or prefer to be close to restaurants, you'll probably want to stay close to the Jardim Publico de Albufeira which is often considered the heart of Albufeira.

Staying close to the beach might push up the price a little and you may find some hotels and apartments are a little further outside of the main town, towards the likes of Praia da Oura which still has a number of bars and restaurants to enjoy, but you'll likely need to take taxis into Albufeira town.

Family Friendly Resorts

Families will love it here too, with some fun, family friendly resorts keeping children in mind. Self catering options include the Alfagar Aparthotel with its children's splash park, indoor pool (with retractable roof) and kids club during the summer months. Many hotels also offer family or interconnecting rooms. They often can't guarantee them but guests can request them.

All Inclusive Resorts

Sometimes you just want to kick back and not worry about anything, and there are some great all inclusive resorts in Albufeira to take advantage of. Take a look at places like the budget friendly Monica Isabel Beach Club which can also have free child places, or for something a little more luxury option, try the premium Jupiter Albufeira Hotel which also features a number of exciting water slides.

Self Catering Accommodation

The Algarve is well known for its villas and self catering apartments, so this can be a great choice if you're trying to stick to a budget and save money, or you prefer to eat out at local restaurants. There are lots of local mini markets and two ALDI supermarkets here, so self catering is certainly an easy option.
