Getting to, from and around Playa de las Americas

Tenerife South airport is the nearest airport to Playa de las Americas (flying into Tenerife North airport will add a good 30-45 minutes onto your journey), with pretty much all direct UK flights flying into the south. Airlines like Ryanair, Jet2 and easyJet fly from UK regional airports like Belfast, Newcastle and Bristol too. Once you arrive, there are a number of options to get from the airport to Las Americas.

Coach Transfers

Many flight inclusive packages will include coach transfers, mainly with TUI and Jet2holidays, and if yours doesn't, it's a cheap way to get to your hotel. It's worth booking this in advance when you book your holiday.

Taxi

A taxi is another option, taking about 20 minutes and the journey will cost around €30-35 each way. This is obviously more expensive but does give you more freedom.

Public Transport

There is a local bus that leaves from outside the main airport terminal and takes you into Playa de las Americas for around €4 per person. Sundays aren't as frequent but if you don't mind waiting around, this can be very cheap, especially if you're travelling alone.

Car Hire

If you sometimes get a little bored by the pool, hiring a car can be a great way to get out and explore the island. You probably don't really need one to get around the town but if you wanted to hire a car from the airport, this is affordable when booking in advance, otherwise you can pick up a hire car close to your hotel, if not at your hotel. Explore the coast here by heading up to Las Gigantes, or around to Golf del Sur, or head up into Teide National Park, as long as you're okay with heights!

Things to do in Playa de las Americas

Being one of the busiest resorts in Tenerife, there is loads to do in Las Americas, making it great for families and groups. Whether you simply want to chill out by the pool or at the beach, or try one of the more adventurous attractions, activities and water sports like parasailing, banana boating, go karting or paragliding.

Be sure to try out the kayaking with dolphins or if you want to see them in a more leisurely style, there are a number of dolphin and whale watching trips with pick ups from your Las Americas hotel.

Of course any visitor to Tenerife needs to spend a day at Siam Park. Rated on Trip Advisor as the number one waterpark attraction in the world, it’s easy to get to from Las Americas and Siam water park puts on shuttle buses for those staying out of town. This sprawling promises lots of fun amongst the water slides, wave pool and lazy river. With year round sunshine, this place is open throughout the year and tickets can be bought online, in advance from selected outlets and shops around Las Americas, or at the park.

The Beaches

Despite Tenerife being the home of black sand beaches, the three main beaches around Las Americas are either golden sand or rocky. Las Americas beach is a little sandy but mainly rocky, while Playa de Troya in the north of the resort and Playa del Camison south of the resort centre, both have beautiful beaches with golden sand.

Shopping

Being a bustling resort, there are plenty of shops here with several shopping centres including the Safari Shopping Center, Oasis Shopping Center and Siam Mall across the other side of the TF1 motorway. Safari Centre is one of the most popular places for shopping and is within easy reach of many of the local hotels. There's underground parking here too.

Nightlife

Las Americas has arguably the best nightlife on the island. You'll find the clubs and bars here, as well as a couple of sunset view bars too. Nights out here are fun and can get very busy, especially during the peak summer season between June and August, and on Friday and Saturday nights.

Siam Park

Of course any visitor to Tenerife needs to spend a day at Siam Park. Rated on Trip Advisor as the number one waterpark attraction in the world, it’s easy to get to from Las Americas and Siam water park puts on shuttle buses for those staying out of town. This sprawling promises lots of fun amongst the water slides, wave pool and lazy river. With year round sunshine, this place is open throughout the year and tickets can be bought online, in advance from selected outlets and shops around Las Americas, or at the park.

Teide National Park Day Trip

If you want something a little different from another pool day, head up into Teide National Park, either hiring a car or by an organised excursion. Trips will take you up through the pine forests to the lava fields below Mount Teide volcano. You can take the cable car to near the top, or simply enjoy a walk around the lava fields. This place is particularly great for star gazing too.

Where to stay in Playa de las Americas

There's a range of accommodation options to suit all budgets in Playa de las Americas, and most are within an easy walking distance of the restaurants and beaches. From self catering holiday apartments to family friendly hotels and all inclusive resorts, all budgets and needs are catered for. Many hotels have sea view rooms and kids clubs, however, family holidays might be better suited elsewhere if you prefer a quieter, more relaxing resort.

Playa De Las Vistas

Playa de las Vistas is a gorgeous sandy beach surrounded by bars and restaurants, making it a popular place to stay and close to Los Cristianos. Hotels near here include the Coral Compostela Beach, Mediterranean Palace Hotel and Parque La Paz.

Las Americas - South

The coastal area between Playa del Camison and Las Americas beach is still busy but a little quieter than other areas. A surf school, beach bar and a few shops sit amongst the hotels which include Parque Santiago IV, Parque Santiago III and the H10 Conquistador.

Veronicas

Well known for its nightlife and the party place on the island, especially in the summer months of June, July and August, Veronica's Strip is where you'll find the late night clubs and bars. If you want to be nearby (so you don't have to walk too far to get home), check out hotels like the Sol Tenerife and Alexandre Hotel Gala and the Alexandre Troya Hotel. The Starco Centre is also closeby which has both shops and lively bars.

Booking Your Holiday

Package Holidays

Booking your flight and hotel together as a package can help you save money. We always recommend booking with a travel company who offers ABTA or ATOL protection like loveholidays, easyJet Holidays, Jet2holidays or TUI, but you may be tempted to book low cost flights with Ryanair and your accommodation separately through Booking.com, so just make sure you have good travel insurance.

All Inclusive

All inclusive holidays here are possible, however, with so much on your doorstep, you'll definitely want to get out and explore. Half board could be a good option as an alternative, allowing to have certain meals included, but giving you the freedom to try some of the local tapas bars and restaurants.

Free Child Places

Companies like Jet2holidays and TUI offer free child place holidays to Playa de las Americas, with some key family friendly hotels involved. These are usually throughout the year but can get booked quickly. Simply search with your prefered tour operator to see what's available.

Low Deposits

Booking in advance can be another great way to save money, securing the price of your holiday early. As a result, many travel agents and tour operators allow you to pay a low deposit, often £50 or £60 per person, and then pay off the balance over time.

Last Minute

If you're flexible with when you fly and where you stay, late deals to Tenerife can help you save money...sometimes. Las Americas has budget friendly hotels that often need filling, but at peak times like during the summer holidays in July and August, prices can skyrocket so it's not always the most cost effective.

Group Holidays

Lads holidays and hen parties are very popular in Las Americas. The budget friendly accommodation, busy nightlife and year round sunshine make this a very popular spot for groups of friends heading away together. Staying close to the strip can be a good idea if you're planning to spend a lot of time there. Accomodation nearby include the Sol Tenerife hotel, Alexandre Hotel Gala and the Paraiso del Sol Apartments, which is also a 15 minute walk from Siam Park. It's worth bearing in mind that not all hotels and apartments will accept large same-sex groups so do your research.
